Jar of XOs

Happy Thursday!  When participated in the HYCCT challenges, I was fortunate to win a $50 gift certificate to Taylored Expressions.  Want to read a {funny} story about the slow boat from Des Moines Jersey City my stamps were on?  Grab a cup of coffee or tea, this is the longest, wordiest post I’ve done in a long time! I promise some eye candy after all of the words!

First, the email with my gift certificate code ended up in my SPAM folder.  {roll eyes}

Second, I waited for their December petite-a-palooza release.  {well worth the wait}

Third, I ordered my goodies.  I had a shipping notice the same day from TE.  I wanted to hit their free shipping threshold, so I chipped in some of my own money.  Thank goodness, there was tracking on my package.  On December 19th, my package was shipped from Des Moines, IA.  {AWESOME1}

On December 22, my package arrived here in NJ at the Jersey City USPS sorting facility.  I was excited I would have my goodies prior to Christmas.   WRONG!  My package sat in Jersey City.  I allowed Christmas to pass and Thursday, Dec 26 to pass.  No package!  No updates to the tracking.  Friday, Dec 27, I call the USPS 800 number and deal with their automated “Tell me what I can help you with in a few words” system that is very annoying.  Finally, I get someone on the line who is human and ask for an update.  Basically, she says she will have our local office call me.

Saturday, Dec 28, I get a phone call from the local office, but we aren’t home.  I call her back and the line does a quick ring into a busy tone and I’m thinking “Oh, come on!”  Finally, I get through and she starts looking into the whereabouts of my package.  She said if I didn’t get it on Monday to call her back.  Well, it didn’t arrive on Monday.  I called her back, again dealing with their weird phones.  She emails Jersey City.  The package still doesn’t arrive prior to the New Year.  {NOT SO AWESOME!}

On January 2, when I couldn’t get through to the USPS, I emailed TE to ask if there was insurance on the package.  My next question to the USPS was going to be “When do you admit you lost the package?”  Awesome customer service again from TE and Jon responded on Friday, Jan 3 that the tracking was saying it was out for delivery.  WHAT?!  I pull it up and it most certainly was “out for delivery.”

Here’s the kicker — we were in the middle of a snow storm. I highly doubted we’d be getting mail.  The USPS motto of “Neither rain nor sleet nor snow” or however it goes doesn’t apply to our local USPS.  No big surprise, no mail delivery on Jan 3.  Saturday, no mail delivery.  Ok, what the heck?  Roads were perfectly clear and perfectly drivable.  Temps weren’t -25.  {C’MON MAN!}

Finally, on Sunday, Jan 5, my package was delivered.  The box was a bit dinged up, but fortunately, all of my stuff was inside and in working order.   I definitely recommend Taylored Expressions for their super cute stuff and awesome customer service AND I definitely recommend tracking on your packages! {YIPPEE SKIPPY!}

So what did I make……

When I went shopping through the TE store, I absolutely LOVED the Hugs & Kisses set and die.  I just thought the little jar was too, too cute.  I also ordered their Hearts Cutting Plate, missing the important detail of using a Metal Shim Plate with it.  So….after the long awaited arrival, I pulled my goodies out yesterday and went to work.  I realized very quickly how important that Metal Shim Plate will be.  With my Big Shot, I wasn’t getting a cut all the way through with the cutting plate.  I cut a manilla folder and added in a piece to help shim it.  That helped and I was able to punch out about 2-3 rows of the hearts.  But, I wasn’t getting a clean, all the way through, all the way across cut of any of the card stock.

In order to create my background like I wanted, I cut a piece of computer paper with the die to get the grid.  I taped it down on my card base with Scotch tape and went to work, putting my hearts in the grid.  {Sometimes, I think I need to have my head examined when I spend the amount of time I do on some cards!} Unfortunately, along the way, some of the glue from the hearts got onto the grid and the grid didn’t peel off as nicely as I hoped.  There was no way I was starting over with this so I doubled up some of my hearts, added in a big, strategically placed bow and went with it!

Even with the flaws of the additional bits of computer paper, I LOVE this card.  Do any of you have the metal shim plate? Do you have a substitute for it?  Anything from Home Depot that could work?  If so, let me know!

Here are all of my goodies — Hugs & Kisses, Shine Bright (from that December release), Hearts Cutting Plate, Circles Cutting Plate, sticker paper and not pictured, a plain, old, plastic cassette tape case to hold business cards!

There you have it!  If you made it this far, THANK YOU & GOOD JOB!!

  1. Oh my goodness Cammy, so glad your goodies arrived! Well worth the wait but not the frustration of having to deal with the USPS. I am still waiting on a pkg. our daughter sent us before Christmas! I love your card!!

  2. I am so excited you finally received your pkg!!! Yay! Super cute card! I enjoyed reading your story but would have been fit to be tied if it had happened to me!

    So glad your story has a happy ending! Sunday delivery? That's wild!
    ohmypaper! (SCS)

  3. Adorable card!!! So glad your stuff finally showed up! And I'm rather impressed you were able to get a human on the phone from USPS! That in itself is a feat.

    I bought a metal shim from The Cat's Pajamas last year, but I've heard you can get thin metal sheeting at Home Depot and cut it to size.

  4. Just came across your story about your prize. What a saga! Glad you got your goodies anyway because you turned out a super card with them! The idea of the grid was great – too bad some of it stuck, but I can't tell – good bow placement I guess!
    I just got my prize yesterday! Was one of the last ones to get our code I think. I am about to post pic of the cards I made with one of my stamps today.
